How to use parental control settings on my Viasat modem?

The “parental control” settings within your Viasat modem let you restrict internet access on specific devices, restrict access to certain sites, and to restrict access during specific hours of the day.

Use this guide to help set up parental controls on your Viasat modem.

Before starting, in order to know how to log into your modem, you will need to figure out what Viasat modem you have. If you are not sure, read this article: Which type of Viasat modem do I have?

Logging into your Router Settings on a Viasat Wi-Fi Gateway Modem

  1. To access the router interface

  2. Enter your modem user name and password

    • If you have not previously created your own user name and password
    • The modem credentials are:
      * Username: admin
      * Password: Use the Admin Password or Key from the sticker on the bottom of the modem
  3. Click the Sign In button

Logging into your Router Settings on a SB2+ (Surfbeam 2+) Modem

  1. To access the router interface

  2. Enter your modem user name and password

    • If you have not previously created your own user name and password
    • The credentials are:
      • Username: admin
      • Password: admin
  3. Click the Sign In button

Modifying parental control settings

Once you’re logged into the modem, click on the Parental Controls tab on the top menu bar. Below you can find a detailed description of the settings you have available:

  • Enabling/Disabling Parental Controls
    • Use these radio buttons to enable or disable the parental controls feature
  • Access Blocking Policy
    • An Access Blocking Policy allows for specific blocking on certain, specified devices – not only can you block access to specific websites by device, you can also set rules that block internet access during specific times by device.
    • Pick a number for the parental control policy you want to develop (you can design several policies to cover different devices).
  • Enter Policy Name
    • Enter a name for each policy to help you remember what it is for, and choose whether you want its current status to be enabled or disabled using the radio buttons.
  • Target Devices
    • Type the names of the devices you would like the policy to target.
  • Add Another Device
    • ​​​Use this button to add multiple devices to the same policy.
  • Block Internet Access
    • This is where you can select to block internet access always, never, or at specific times on the devices you’re creating a policy for.
    • If you select Specific Times, you can adjust the times based on weekend or school nights.
  • Block Specific Sites​​​
    • This is where you can enter the URLs of specific websites you would like blocked on the devices you’re creating a policy for.
    • The devices will not be able to access these websites.
  • Add Another Site
    • Use this button to add additional URLs you would like blocked on the policy you’re creating. Once you’re done creating your policies, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.
