Very Slow download speeds

Download in below 10 averaging around 5 to 6 mbs upload hovers around 2.8. This is in the AM on a Monday! Tried two power disconnects/reconnects with no significant changes. Seems to have been decreasing in speed over the past month. Need help.

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

Thanks for your message. We’ll investigate your issue and get back to you soon when we have any updates or if we need any pieces of information.

Thanks,
Leonardo

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

Could you kindly share with us an advanced speed check? The advanced speed check shows your modem speeds as well as your device’s, which can help with our analysis. You can find instructions on how to run it here: How to run a speed test from my modem?

Thanks,
Leonardo

Please inform me why this is necessary to reveal the slow download speeds and why it is necessary in addressing this problem. I just ran three separate speed tests from devices and the average is Download 7 Upload 3

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

We usually request the advanced speed check to be run in order to eliminate other possible causes, such as Wi-Fi signal, for example. If you are using your device wired directly to the modem via an ethernet cable, please let us know and we can explore other possibilities.

Thanks,
Leonardo

Signal goes from Viasat modem directly to phone, laptop or TV.

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

Wi-Fi means a wireless signal and a bad wireless signal might hinder your speeds, which is the reason we request the advanced speed check, so we can rule out the possibility of Wi-Fi problems.

Thanks,
Leonardo

Thanks. Speeds from modem 41.5 and 4.88 and from the device 23 and 3.8.

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

Both your test and the one I performed over here yielded excellent speeds, however, as you can see in your result, your device is receiving half of the modem speeds, which can indeed be explained by a Wi-Fi issue. If possible, could you run the test from a device connected directly to the modem via an ethernet cable? Please ensure that the Wireless connection is turned off as well for running this test.

Thanks,
Leonardo

It’s not possible to direct link via ethernet cable (different rooms). I just ran two speed tests again with Viasat modem and received an average 5.4 down/4.3 up internal and 5.1 down/4.6 up with modem.

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

From what I can see, your speeds might fluctuate depending on the time of the day. Could you run new tests both in the morning and during the evening? Sorry for asking for many tests but this could help us confirm what is happening.

Thanks,
Leonardo

8 AM Device 30.0 Down 5.1 Up
Modem 27.1 Down 4.6 Up
8 PM Device 3.0 Down 4.4 Up
Modem 2.1 Down 4.8 Up

One more AM?PM reading

0700 PM Device 11.6 down 4.1 up
Modem 10.7 4.9

900 AM Device 12.5 down 4.7 up
Modem 19.1 4.9

Hi @sctaylor11 ,

Thank you for these readings! We’ll investigate a bit more and once we have any updates or need any new pieces of information we’ll let you know.

Thanks,
Leonardo

Hi @sctaylor11,

According to our analysis, your internet setup doesn’t have any inherent issues.

The bad speeds seen in the evening might be caused by network congestion during the peak busy period (evening hours). I can see both good and bad speed results in your history, which can be explained by the time of the day you ran them.

During the peak period, we’d recommend connecting fewer devices to your network, not using VPN, and connecting your device via ethernet wire if possible.

If you run out of priority data, your traffic is not prioritized and you might see slower rates too, especially during the peak busy periods.

We understand this is not an ideal situation, but we appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Thanks,
Leonardo
