Unusually high daily data usage

What could cause this? I’ve occasionally used 10 GB in one day, but never 23.3! Two suspects are having Photos open for over 24 hours and being online on another desktop, although I was not active on it, just connected to internet.

Hi @ridgetop1005 , we are sorry about that experience.

Is it ok if we take a look at your data usage to better identify what has been using your data and provide a recommendation based on that?

Thanks,

Nacho

Go ahead. When I talked with Support yesterday the connection was so poor I had to keep asking him to repeat that. I thought he said conscription, but it was consumption. He said it was Network Sharing and browsing. Two devices, Windows device and unknown device (which is my new Dell Win 11 desktop). My iPhone 7 does not connect using Viasat. I was stunned to see amount of data usage!

Hi @ridgetop1005, we will take a look and report back here.

Hi @ridgetop1005,

I see about 21 GB of (mostly upload) usage that was consumed over Saturday and Sunday. Most of it was consumed over a Windows device. This traffic is categorized as “Network Storage” and was uploaded over what seems to be Windows SkyDrive. Does that sound related to the photos app you mentioned? Is it a Microsoft app/service?

I see that this consumed more than 50% of your monthly data allowance over a couple of hours, which is unfortunate. Since it appears like this usage was unexpected and that you had to purchase 30 GBs of Buy More because of this, I will go ahead an add a credit to your account to remove the cost of that purchase.

Thanks,

Nacho

**Skydrive was changed to OneDrive n 2014. I uploaded a lot of photos , possibly on Sat. 05/20. Yet thre are no photos when I log into OneDrive. I suspected that data usage was somehow due to Photos. When I choose photo in Gmail it opens Google Photos, which is not current. I also have Amazon Photos (on iCloud). iCloud is listed under OneDrive Personal Pictures, which has Folders, Uploads (empty) & Screenshots (empty). The various Photos apps are all very confusing. When I log into iCloud, there are 828 items, which has most current photos. So maybe this is the upload that used so much data.

Hi @ridgetop1005,

Our traffic measurement tools say “Windows SkyDrive” but it is known that it can be difficult for all these traffic tools to properly categorize traffic down to the app.

A tool that might be useful for you to install on your Windows computer to monitor all traffic from that device is https://www.glasswire.com/ - even in its free version it lets you see the traffic over last 24 hrs. See this example screenshot below:

With this tool you could help us track down the app that is doing these uploads. Please let us know if you are interested in using it.

Thanks,

Nacho
