Speed from device a fraction of speed from modem

I use the Viasat browser. The speed test gives me speeds from my device and from the modem.

I used to use a router provided by Viasat. It gave me speeds from my device between 50 and 100 Mbps, for about a year.

A few weeks ago, the speed from my device dropped to 1 or 2 Mbps. Speed from modem remained pretty good, though it had dropped to 40-60. (My computer is about three feet from the router.)

Troubleshooting with Viasat, we disconnected the router and reset the modem to factory setting. Then, using the modem’s internal router, I was getting speeds from my device about 12 to 20 Mbps., speeds from router between 40 and 90. (Remember, my computer is about three feet from the modem.) This implies that the modem’s internal wi-fi router is very, very slow, much slower than the modem itself.

Today, speed from my device is 1 or 2 Mbps, speed from router 2 to 5 Mbps. That is far too slow.

I think I need a new modem. I also need a new router. The modem’s internal router is way too slow. But there seems to be something wrong with the modem as well.

Hi @dcpetterson ,

After reviewing your case, we’ve determined there is no issue with your modem; it appears you’re experiencing Wi-Fi problems.

We don’t recommend using the modem’s internal router, as its range is quite limited. Upgrading to a new router could improve your service and help bring your device speeds closer to those of your modem. Here on the Forum, we often recommend the following two router options:

Both are excellent choices and can help extend the Wi-Fi range and quality throughout an average-sized house.

For setup instructions, you can refer to these guides:

Thank you for your recommendations. I will try one of the routers you suggest.
