Slow Ping Rate is Causing Issues with Gaming and Streaming

Hello, I am seeing a Ping of up to 632ms (anything over 40 - 60ms can cause delays on packets arriving, which results in delays in game action or can cause video continuity issues. I game and stream a lot, which is really annoying, and the streaming quality is bad, with bad quality video and occasional macro-blocking. I need to get this resolved, or I’m looking for a different carrier. Also, it would be nice if we could attach screenshots, etc. to add additional information.

Hi @dangarcia

Satellite internet has extremely high latency, due to the distance between satellites and the surface of the Earth.

It’s normal to see a ping of 500-700ms in speed tests when you have a satellite connection.

This does influence gaming (especially if online), but should not at all influence video streaming (due to the way buffering works).

Are you also experiencing slow speeds?

PS –

You can just paste anything you want into the Forum to attach it

Hi @dangarcia

Are you still experiencing issues?

I noticed that your modem has had quite a few offline events this week.
Did you happen to reboot it at any point?

I ran a few tests on your modem, and even though the speeds look very good, it’s possible that these drops may be causing your issues.

Hi again @dangarcia

I see that you also ran a few Speedchecks on your end yesterday, and the results were good, too:

However, I investigated your setup, and it’s possible that you’re suffering from an antenna mispoint (or your dish is out of alignment).

Even though you have good speeds, your modem is suffering far too many offline events and network drops this week, and the start of these issues match a weather event from May 8th.

Do you recall any rain/storm around that day?

Yes we had a couple of storms. I guess I need to have a tech come out and repoint?

Thank you for the response and investigation.

Hi @dangarcia

That is correct!

I see that you already requested the service call, and this is scheduled for 05/16. :tada:

We’ll keep track of your appointment and check back in with you later, when it’s complete.

Hi @dangarcia

I see that your service call was completed a while ago.
How has your connection been since then?

It hasn’t changed. Still the same issue.

Thank you for the follow up.

I will probably have to go to another provider.

Hi @dangarcia

Sorry to hear that. I see that your speeds are good, but unfortunately the high Ping is an issue we’re still working on, as satellite internet is not good for gaming in general.

We’re currently exploring how hybrid networks can handle latency-sensitive traffic by making routing decisions based on Ping. We plan to have a solution in the near future, but I understand your frustration.

If you need assistance with anything else, let us know!

For public knowledge:

I’m currently marking the last reply as the “Solution” to this topic, so that others can quickly find this in case they also experience gaming issues, and don’t know about the High Ping/Latency of satellite connections.

This means that the topic will remain open, and any user can reply to the conversation.

Alternatively, if anyone has a similar issue, it’s also possible to start a new topic instead.

Thank you. Maybe I’ll come back when you get things sorted out.

It is getting worse. See attached speed test.

Hi @dangarcia

It doesn’t look like the previous test was run over the Viasat network, but rather a “Latitude-sh”.
Did you happen to be using a VPN?

Yeah, I might’ve forgotten to turn it off.

thanks
