Really slow speeds

Speed test shows I am getting .4 mbps. First noticed about 2 days ago. Really slow streaming to the TV. My plan gives me 25 MBPS and I still have 16GB left on this months plan.

Hi @pgrossjr47

When you have time, can you please run a few tests using the guide below?

  • You can download the Viasat Browser here: https://browser.viasat.com/.
  • After you install the browser, you need to be logged in on speedcheck.viasat.com.
    • To do that, click “Login” in the upper right corner of the menu, as indicated in the picture below.
    • The credentials for this login are the same as the ones you use for MyViasat.

When you run the tests from the Viasat browser, we can see “Speed from your device” and most importantly “Speed from your modem”, which is greatly useful to identify discrepancies in the speeds, such as in this example below:

I know this is a bit more cumbersome than just running a normal test, but the complete diagnosis helps us eliminate other factors.

:exclamation: The Modem Speed Test is currently not compatible with iPhone/iOS devices. If you don’t have an Android mobile device, please run the test on a computer.

Also, as you’ve mentioned issues with streaming, could you run a fast.com test as well? This tool is designed by Netflix to specifically check your video streaming speeds.

Netflix’s Video Streaming Speed Test:

Go to fast.com on any browser and wait for the test to run. It’ll look like this when finished:

:exclamation: Make sure to click on “Show More Info” to show the rest of the result:

PS: We don’t have access to your fast.com results,

So please copy and paste them here, or send us a screenshot.

Done. Download speed is at 1.4MBPS so well below what I am paying for. It was working fine until about 2 or 3 days ago. Have not been home much, so didnt bother with it until today. There was a bad storm around that time.

Done, I replied on the forum

Hi @pgrossjr47

I saw your fast.com and speedcheck.viasat.com results, and it seems like the issue may be the device running them.

Your plan is Choice 25 Mbps/100GB, and the modem speeds are sometimes even higher than that on the tests:

… Your device speeds on the other hand are really low, sometimes less than 1% of your modem speeds.

Are the modem and the device used on the same room? Did you run all the tests from the exact same distance to the modem?

Got it. I’m investigating if this storm may have caused your satellite or antenna to be misaligned (resulting in a bad signal quality) a few days ago.

I was preparing to respond when your latest message arrived. By device, i assume you mean the computer I ran the tests on and yes it is not only in the same room, but the modem and the PC are only a few feet apart. and yes they were all run on the same device. As noted earlier, It had been doing fine until the past few days.

Hi @pgrossjr47

Understood, thanks for the info!

I checked your account, and it’s possible we’re dealing with a Wi-Fi issue. To double-check this, could you please run another few tests, but this time using an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi?

been gone most of the day. Not sure I have an ethernet cable. If not, it will be tomorrow before I can do it.

reran the tests, Fast.com is attached.

Hi @pgrossjr47

I saw your results and they look great!

80 Mbps on fast.com and 85.28 Mbps on your speedcheck.viasat.com device speed test – much higher than your plan.

Did you do anything different at all while running those last 2 tests? Same device, same distance?

Yes, run from the same device/distance, but with an ethernet cable. So is there a fix for the Wi-Fi as I use it stream on my TV and it is not possible to connect it with Ethernet. The router is the Viasat one. BTW, I did restart it a few days ago to see if that would help. But no difference.

Got it, then we’ve confirmed that the direct speeds with an Ethernet cable are much higher.
I couldn’t find the modem speed test on your last speedcheck.viasat.com (the test timed out) – did you happen to take a screenshot of it?

Within the Forum we often recommend these 2 Router alternatives to use along Viasat SB2+ Modems (the one your setup uses):

These are both very good Routers and help in amplifying the Wi-Fi range and quality throughout an average-sized house.

Assume it timed out because my PC is not using WIfi right now. I have the ethernet connected. I will reconnect and run. On the routers, are you telling me i need to get one of those and connect it to the Viasat router?

I ran it again and got a error message, so I closed the window and ran it again. Assume you can see the results. Took a screen shot, let me know if you want it.

Hi @pgrossjr47

I see that you ran 3 new tests. Unfortunately, the modem speed did time-out on the first 2. This is most likely an internal error on our side and not your connection itself.

The very last test thankfully has both tests.

The difference between the modem speed (63 Mbps) and the device speed (7 Mbps) is quite large.
To double-check, was this test run with an Ethernet cable or via Wi-Fi?

Yes, Viasat usually recommends customers to add an external Router to the setup, as the SB2 modem works best as modem-only, due to its Wi-Fi signal not being as strong as an actual Router’s.

Ran on wifi. I disconnected the ethernet and connected with Wifi because I thought that might be why the modem test kept returning an error. I see from your note that was not the case. Anyway, need me to run agains?

Hi @pgrossjr47

I see that you just ran another test a few minutes ago and the device speed is again back to 80-90 Mbps, was this done with the Ethernet cable?

If so, we most definitely have a Wi-Fi signal issue, due to the SB2 modem not having a strong Wi-Fi signal like normal Routers.

Your Ethernet tests show very good speeds, and the ones over Wi-Fi are usually 10% of that, so I believe the best solution for this would be to acquire an external Router.

This will greatly improve the Wi-Fi coverage in your house and amplify the signal.
