Incorrect download speed displaying from speed check

I need to take an online proctored exam with Pearson VUE. They use OnVUE application. This application requires your network connection to have a minimum download speed of 6 Mbps. I can’t even pass the initial setup because the internet speed they detect is 3.22 Mbps. Here is the kicker, the Viasat Speed Check (performed twice) says my speed was 31.9 and then 18.9 Mbps. These tests were done within minutes of each other. Make it make sense!!! I highly doubt an organization that only wants to ensure there are no obvious network issues before allowing a user to start a standardized test will lie about the network speed detected. I’m always complaining about the speed being slow and I’m getting sick of getting the same answer that it’s due to congestion times within my area. If this is the case why is there such a difference between the results??? Shouldn’t the speed check done by Viasat show such a low download speed that would make more sense than making it look like there is no issue with download speeds at this time.

Hi @rickea_talley

I’m sorry about this experience you’re having with Viasat.

A few questions to help us start out:

  1. Are you currently using the PC’s Wi-Fi connection, or is it connected via Ethernet cable?
  2. Is your PC located far away from the modem, or are they in the same room/floor?
  3. Do you use only the Viasat-provided modem, or do you have any Routers/Extenders/Mesh etc. in the network?

Also, I see that you only ran the Device speed test part of Speedcheck:

Could you download the Viasat Browser please, and run the tests again, so we can crosscheck the speeds between your modem and device? This helps a lot in identifying the root cause of slow speeds.

I’ll attach the full guide here: How to run a complete speed diagnosis

Hi again @rickea_talley

As a heads-up, I’ve noticed that your account might be suffering from de-prioritization of speeds around the evening peak periods due to heavy data usage:

Would it be possible for you to run a few tests during the morning and afternoon?

If we can confirm whether your slow speeds only happen during the evening, because of the usage matter, then it might be best to reschedule the OnVUE exam to an earlier time, to maximize your experience.

(We also strongly recommend taking these exams with an Ethernet cable, as any network fluctuation can disconnect you from the OnVUE app)
