Fast on mobile, slow on desktop

Greetings,

I have several devices attached with our router, all are wireless (phones, consoles, etc…) except for my work computer which is wired directly. Everything is fine save for some latency when gaming, however the work computer speed is extremely slow. I do not have permission to make changes to the PC and am unable to run a speed check in Viasat browser; however the Google check shows download speed 0.44 Mbps, upload 0.60. Will attach snips of mobile and PC checks for reference.

Please advise, thank you.

Hi @Dasgut,

Thanks for posting.

Are you using a VPN on your work computer? VPNs tend to slow down the speeds on your device.

Can you try running a test with https://speedcheck.viasat.com/ from any browser in your work computer? It won’t let you run the test from the modem, but the test from the device will let us check if your Internet Provider appears as “Viasat” (like in this example below) or as a different one - which would indicate a VPN is being used.

Thanks,

Nacho

Thank you Nacho. Yes, there is a VPN in use due to HIPAA. Thank you for the info. I was able to rerun the test, attached below.

If it is indeed the only culprit, is there anything I can do to help with the signal strength?

Hi, @Dasgut,

In order to improve the performance you can try the following:

  • Disable unnecessary connections and processes: other devices/processes might be reducing the available bandwidth on your work computer.

  • Choose a VPN server closer to your location: if available, try selecting a VPN server that is physically closer to you.

  • Restart your device: sometimes a restart can solve minor issues and improve performance.

It is important to note that there are inherent limitations to using a VPN that can impact performance, such as the additional encryption and routing of data.
