Does Speed Check have a bug?

I’ve run speed check many, many, many times. Since I am running CAT6 cable from my laptop to the Spock gateway and have wifi disabled on my laptop, why do I repeatedly get the following error message?

“Potential Wi-Fi issue: The download speed on the device is only 18.23% of the speed on the modem. Please get closer to your modem and test again.”

I’m not using wifi and device speed is usually lower than modem speed. Sometimes by very large amounts.

So is this a bug or is there some other reason to explain this?

Thank you for your time

Hi @geo

I’ve escalated your case to the internal Speedcheck team.
We’ll let you know as soon as they have more information on this issue.

I have run speedcheck also by moving CAT6 cable to other ethernet port on Spock gateway. I have also swapped out CAT 6 cables (different cales). So I think that pretty much eliminates a possible port or cable problem.

I have also ran speedcheck from a different device (my Android phone) .

So this leads me back to a possible software issue.

Hi @geo

Thanks for all the info.

Our Speedcheck team is going to roll out a fix for this – as you’re connected via direct cable, the error message is indeed wrong.

This Wi-Fi error message can show up due to the fluctuation in speeds, at the exact moment in which the Speedcheck test is run – the discrepancy between modem speeds and device speeds from peak period congestion is most likely the cause of this false Wi-Fi warning on your account.

Not so concerned about the error message. What concerns me is that the device speed seems to be closer to what the video buffering that I am seeing.

In my other post “Almost no speed tonight” explains more.

Whenever I am online now and am experiencing a video buffering issue I usually run speedcheck to keep a record of date and time. I am not a high data user and barely use half of my priority data.

Hi @geo

Understood, as the Wi-Fi error message issue is currently undergoing a fix, I’ll return the conversation to our previous topic regarding the speeds.
