Connection and streaming issues

I upgraded a month ago to the unleased plan. I have nothing but slow streaming issues and today reloading consistently. What is the problem?
The unleased plan has done nothing to improve speeds. Has anyone switched services to another provider in the Barnum MN area?

Hi @Dmdelaney ,

I’ve sent you a direct message requesting additional information before we can proceed with your support.

Thanks,
Leonardo

Hi @Dmdelaney ,

Thanks for providing the requested information. When you get a chance can you please use a laptop or Android phone to run a complete speed diagnosis using https://speedcheck.viasat.com? This will help us get a full reading on the speed situation and allow us to identify/rule out Wi-Fi issues.

You can find the instructions on how to run it here: How to run a complete speed diagnosis?

Thanks,
Leonardo

Hi, attached are the results.
Thank you
Deborah

@Dmdelaney did you make sure to log into your My Viasat account and use the Viasat Browser?

Thanks,
Leonardo

No I used the app. I will do this now.

Our one floor home is appx 1400 sq ft.

Did you get my updated speed via the browser? We are a 1400 sq ft home and I am 30ft from the wifi modem.

Hi @Dmdelaney

Do you happen to have an external Router that you can use alongside your Viasat Modem? This SB2+ Model that you own does not usually have a Wi-Fi signal strong enough for 1400 square feet.

Within the Forum we often recommend these 2 Router alternatives to use along Viasat SB2+ Modems (the one your setup uses):

These are both very good Routers and help in amplifying the Wi-Fi range and quality throughout an average-sized house.

Also @Dmdelaney

If you not do have a Router or cannot get one right now, could you please run another Speedcheck, but this time with your computer connected directly via Ethernet cable to the Modem?

This way, we can be sure whether its signal is the issue or not.

I don’t have an ethernet cable. Haven’t used one in years.

So, if I understand correctly, I need the additional router?

Don’t understand why Viasat would install this router knowing it wouldn’t cover up to 1400 sq ft.

Thank you

Is the modem we have leased and included with the monthly payment? If so, why can’t you upgrade the modem to cover 1400 sq ft versus having to purchase an additional router to use with the modem?

Hi @Dmdelaney

Most Modems with built-in Routers don’t offer as good of a Wi-Fi signal quality as an external Router (or Wi-Fi Mesh Router). They are all usually built to be used with an additional Router, as your Modem only serves as a bridge between your local network and the Internet, while the Router sits in between your Internet connection and your local network.

Using separate devices also offers more flexibility in what you can do with your network.

The speed you’re getting on your devices also depends on the type of network that you’re connecting to: the 2.4 GHz band can reach up to 150 feet indoors, for example; and the 5.0 GHz can reach less and is heavily impacted by obstructions such as walls, floors, doors etc.

You can check if you’re using 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz by the name of the network (usually “vsat-24” for 2.4 or “vsat-5” for 5.0).

If you’d like to read up more on the differences: Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi? | Brightspeed

Regarding the modem upgrade question:
The model you’re using is specific to the Viasat satellite that your region uses, so we can’t change it to another model.

Hi? I have purchased and installed the TP router. This is the speed results using Viasat Browser. So far I have lost the internet connect once and it is still buffering and reloading.

Please advise

Hi @Dmdelaney

Did you happen to take a picture of the Modem speed result on this previous test? Our system couldn’t grab the speeds, as it seems you may have exited the test before the Modem speed analysis was complete.

It is working much better today.
Thank you
